hey all i am new to beer brewing in fact im still re seaching.
now i may be about to answer my own question but here goes.
I am moving into a small 2 bed room place with my girl.
how ever after reading and my gf listening to me babble about what I am reading I am not allowed to firment beer indoors bc apparently its not the best smell ever. were and how should i store my beer when its ready to just sit and firment I have looked online and people turn a fridge into a fermenting cellar and also able to make sure the inside can be changed to what temperature they want the beer to ferment in. would this fridge be ok to keep out side were the temperature fluxuates alot? any ideas on how i can store it with out my place stinking up.

I haven't noticed much of a smell from the beer fermenting, however brewing yes. My wife doesn't care for the smell of brewing the beer, so I do that late at night when everyone is asleep :)

Same here, I boil outside in my happy place (deck). I'd question what I was being "allowed" to do if my wife said I couldn't keep a fermenter in the corner of a room she never goes in. :)

Apart from the occasional sulphery lager, I have never had a strong smell come from an airlock in over 20 years! There is a soft, slightly sweet aroma for a couple days at most... it's really quite pleasant.

Yeah I've done 4 ag brews and my wife hates the smell of the boil process but the actual fermentation is almost scent free unless you put your nose over the airlock

Def sound advice. My airlock smells are mostly during initial fermentation. But it just smells sweet & hoppy. Not a bad smell from my ales at all. Might even smell kinda like popourri to her?...(Idk,it's some kinda soup:D).

Does your GF like beer? If so brew a batch of her favorite style. No more complaints about brewing again. My fiancee doesn't complain that I have equipment stashed in every closet of our apartment because I keep her hefe's and wheat beers on tap. Plus, her hefe's stink more than any of my brews.

Another alternative is to rig a device that passes the airlock gasses through some activated carbon(can get at pet supply shop in aquarium section).

A refrigerator outside will work so long as you have a dual stage temperature controller(one that can turn a heater on or the fridge on). With temperature swings you will need both levels of control.

If you have a two bedroom place, you have to be "allowed" to set a fermenter in the second closet? Seriously?

It doesn't smell, at least not very strongly, and not very long. I have doors, so I can close them.

+1 on Yoopers comment. But I too am not "allowed" to ferment indoors so I have an STC-1000 from Ebay running a small dorm fridge in my shop. It maintains the temp even in Floridas wildy changing temps. Last week it was 30, this week 80, WTF? So get yourself a used fridge, build the Ebay controller and put a lock on it to keep unwnted helpers out and call it good. Sometimes it is easier to just go with the flow rather than buck the system. I save my battles for more important issues. Just my .02, FWIW.

The only smell my wife didn't like was my first two extract batches i brewed on the kitchen stove. Since then I have graduated to a turkey fryer in my garage. I rarely detect a smell from the fermentation unless I have my nose up to it.

But, you do have to choose your battles I guess. I'm hoping the HBT giveaway will help relieve one of my current battles in the quest for new equipment.

I'm brewing a strawberry blonde ale for SWMBO to get brownie points

Do what you gotta do to brew! :)

I'm lucky in that respect. My wife always did beers & shots with me since we were dating. She's a tough lil thing, but all girl at the same time. You gotta admire her sand. Anyway, curiosity got the best of her last tax time. She came in the LHBS with me & picked out a kit, since she liked all my beers anyway. Still waiting for her to think it's warm enough to brew her 3rd batch that's waiting. Still havin trouble explaining the temp stuff...

Your not allowed? Im not saying "whoes running the household or pants line" crap but you live there too! Do you get no say so on anything? Last time i checked a marriage takes two people. Does she want you be seen and not heard? Im not saying start a fight but dont be a push over either. Theres nothing wrong with you getting your way just like she does. Wanna know why SOME men die so young? Their wife has sucked the life right out of them and crushed their dreams! I see it all the time and the women treat the men like crap and MAKE them wait on them hand and foot like maids..... I have to tell ya thats just crazy and taking advantage. If it were me i would do it anyway and the hell with consequences! Its not a one way street. LADIES reading this please dont get mad i didnt stereo type ALL women but a few act like that and its disturbing. Stand up for yourself dont be bullied

I know that's right. They make the good ones like mine look bad. I've had neighbors like that since I was a kid. Aaaah,& the crying thing when they push an argument way over the limit. They oughtta get an academy award sometimes. Geez.
Life together is a two way street. Quid pro quoe...

I know it! The ones i know will throw boiling hot coffee on ya then break your dialing digits off then set ya on fire for being weak or nice! LMAO! :rockin: They dont want no part of the whole drama or girle girl crap! They just tough!

Well they not dependent and thats a good thing. Just some of them kinda mean though....Now that i think about it REALLY MEAN!

My first wife (RIP) used to brew with me, both at home and at a few of the places I worked... she would go to club meetings with me, etc. Second wife (MSR (May She Rot)) never gave me any grief about brewing (plenty of grief about other stuff though). Current GF loves my beer and digs that I am so passionate about it. She's a great cook and likes to do as much from scratch as possible. Makes her own paneer for Indian curry, etc.. Should we ever get married, I am certain there won't be an issue.

Heres a idea for a compromise though Get some of those filter things. Supposed to get rid of smells and supposed to work great from what i have read in the past. It would be worth a shot to atleast open up communication on the whole brew indoor thing

It is a thin line to walk, but my wife does it. She's tough when she has to be,even in my defense. But she's def a girl the rest of the time that isn't too dependant, but she's no fool either. We both like to cook,we both make beer,we both like drinkin a few & have a good time. I even showed her how to do seafood in the ol' bbq pit.
