After cooling the wort and adding the yeast, there was one day of ferementing. After I put the airlock on day 3, there's been noting for 7 days.

Base on what I have read here I am not too worried, but would like to know what step I could take just to test it out.

Also, its an IPA...is this typical for an IPA?

If you have read these posts you should have seen that everyone will tell you airlock activity is not the definitive sign of fermentation*. Fermentation can be slowed by cold temperature or hastened by warm temperature. You may have a leak in your lid which could be allowing the pressure to be released and not from your airlock. Leave your beer alone for 1-3 weeks and then check a hydrometer reading to really see where the fermentation is at. A hydrometer reading is the true way of knowing where fermentation is at.

It's not untypical for beer to ferment quickly the first couple days and then go in to a less obvious fermentation phase. The best way to check for active fermentation it to take a gravity gravity reading for ~ 3 consecutive days.
 
I thought someone might have insight int o IPA fermentation specifically...the instruction that came with the kit say nothing about the gravity meter. How should it taste when ready for botteling, or is the gravity meter the only way to go from here?

When the active bubbling slows or stops,only initial fermentation is done. It'll then slowly,uneventfully creep down to FG. Your hydrometer is the only sure way to know when fermentation is done & FG numbers are stable 3 days apart. Wait till the two week mark to test it. This is basic to all beers,including IPA's.
 
The gravity reading is the only sure way to know its done. Unless you have a really sensitive palate (sp?) And know what the flavor profile should be testing it won't tell you a lot.

I'm still trying to wake up here, but the way I read your question, you put the airlock on it on day 3, and not on day 1?

I was scratching my head about that too.

If you don't yet have a hydrometer, get one. If you can't get one while doing this batch, give it at least 3 weeks sitting in the primary before you consider bottling it.

I'll usually take a reading at two weeks, another 4 days later. If they're the same, it's finished and has had at least a 4-day clean up period. Then it gets a 5-7 day cold crash to clear before keg/bottle.

Maybe he was using a blowoff tube and switched to an airlock? Otherwise yeah I'm confused too.
