Extracts and competitions

I've been brewing for awhile now, and although well meaning friends tell me how great my beer is, I understand some of its shortcomings and want to improve. It seems to me that competitions are a great way to get good feedback.

An IPA I recently made is by far my best brew and I want knowledgeable feedback on it. It started as a SN celebration ale clone (one of my favorite beers) recipe I that used as a base but altered a bit. The result is similar, but could never be confused with the other.

Would there be anything wrong with submitting an extract based on a clone recipe to competitions?

I don't see why not. I don't think I have judged a single competition where there wasn't such a beer...

Nothing wrong with that at all. Competing is a great way to get meaningful feedback. Keep us posted after you enter.

I'm confused about the question, are you wondering if you should enter an extract beer in a comp, or a clone in a comp. Both are perfectly fine. Judging is blind, so judges don't know from Adam whether a beer is extract or not, and a well made extract should be indistinguishable from an all grain. Many folks have done great in comps with extracts.

As to clones, if I recall correctly one of the longshot winners a few years back was a clone brew. I've entered clones before.

I had a extract based Coffee Porter made by a fellow brewer a couple of days ago that I swore would be all grain but wasn't. It was fantastic.

I've seen where extract brews have won competitions before. Good beer is good beer regardless of method. So go ahead & give it a shot.
