Hi,

I'm brewing a Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar this weekend from an extract kit. It came with an ounce of Liberty hops (4.9% alpha, 3.9% beta) and an ounce of US Northern Brewer (10.3% alpha, 5.1% beta).

The recipe calls for a 1/4 ounce of Liberty for 60 minutes, a 1/2 ounce Northern Brewer for 10-15 minutes, and a 1/4 ounce of Liberty at flame-out.

I've put the ingredients into BeerSmith 2, and it tells me I'll have a bitterness of 15 IBU (with a 15 minute boil for the Northern Brewer). That is well below the 24 IBU the kit says I'll get, and way below the 33 IBU Rogue says their version has.

I've never used either of these hops before, so I'm not sure what to expect out of them. Any advice on tweaking the hops quantities / timing in this recipe?

Thanks for your help!

I get the same numbers you do. I'm not sure why they would recommend the hop timings they did. To remedy, I would add 1/4oz of Northern Brewer at 60

That sounds good. I get almost 28 IBU with that. I'd rather have it a little on the hoppy side opposed to overly sweet.

Thanks!
