Are there any downsides to brewing an extract batch in an eBIAB kettle w/ a 5500W element?

My concern is that the LME / DME / sugar, etc... will stick to and burn on the element.

Obviously the element would be turned off before adding but some may still stick to the element and not dissolve before firing the element?

Does anyone have any experience in this area?

With a 5500W element, you should be boiling at around 30% power, plus or minus. As long as your controller will let you do this, and you mix the extract well while the element is off, you should not have problems. Also, make sure you use one of the ultra low watt density (ULWD) elements (the wavy, fold-back types.) Having a pump to recirculate, while the element is off (or below boiling power) will help with thorough mixing.

Brew on :mug:

With an understanding on how much (or how little) DME/LME darkens during the boil, one could consider adding all the DME/LME just before "flame-on". Basic Brewing Radio - Aug 25 2005 and/or Nov 17 2005 has a number for how much it darkens for a 45 min boil.
