So I was happily watching the wort on my winter warmer boil away when about 30 mins into it I noticed my Hallertau hops sitting on the counter and not in the pot where they should have been. I added them and reset the clock on the boil, a full 55 mins. Just curious if anyone knows if the extra (non-hopped) boiling time will have any effect on the brew?

Thanks!

I believe you'll have a slightly darker wort at the end, as the extra 30 minutes causes a bit of caramelization to occur (Malliard effect?). May affect the taste a bit, too.

Excellent. I added a bit more water to make up for the evaporation. I think I can live with a little extra caramelization (it did have a caramel smell). Just more spice for the Winter Warmer!

did you add actual spices? If so, mind sharing what and how much? :mug:

Sho' nuff...

I boiled 2 cups of water w/ 3/4 lb of honey then simmered for 30 mins w/ 5 cinnamon stick halves, an ounce of sweet orange peel, 3 tbsp pumpkin spice and 1/2 cup of brown sugar. Then strained it into wort at the end of the boil. (Recipe from my local brew shop)

Of course I was doing all of this during the wort boil, which is why I forgot to add the hops in the first place...doh!

Definitely! Especially if you want to enjoy it while it's still winter! My recipe recommends aged 3-4 months. I'm hoping to have it ready by Superbowl Sunday. I'll likely pack some away for next year.

So I'll be drinking pale ale at xmas...but, hey, I got the experience of brewing with spices right?
