In lack of a protein rest discussion to keep my attention here at HBT , I was browsing at http://www.brewingtechniques.com and found this excellent G. Fix article about Diacetyl in beer: http://www.brewingtechniques.com/library/backissues/issue1.2/fix.html

It lists the various ways of avoiding excessive diacetyl and how to fix diacetyl problems including the diacetyl rest.

speaking of them, I just sampled my Hefe and it has less head retention than coke .

I even shortened the protein rest from the suggested 30min to 15min at 126F (52C) and I cannot imagine that this protein rest could have killed all the head retention. I will have to sample another bottle, but the carbonation seems about right.
