Hey guys I am going to brew this tonight. I ordered all the ingredients from AHS to make a 5 gallon batch(Extract Version)...My dilemma is that I only have the capacity to boil four gallons, I guess my question is, would it be ok to do a four gallon boil with these ingredients and just top of with one extra gallon of water in my fermentor, or do I need to adjust anything.

I think beers with less than full boils have worse hop utilization, so you would therefore need a small percentage more hops.

Or, you could just have a slightly less hoppy beer.

If anyone else has an opinion on this, it would be greatly appreciated. I ruined my first batch somehow and cant screw this one up. I am in need of a confidence boost!

Don't believe me eh Devildog? Well here is a post where they basically say hop utilization will be lower, but not enough to worry about. It also has an interesting method for compensating for boil off.

As for ruining a beer, it isn't even possible to do that simply by changing boil volume. Good luck!:mug:

Yea no problem many do this. One benefit is that you can cool your wort down quicker by using cold aqua

Yea, I think pretty much everyone starts out doing partial boils. You're really not going to lose enough magic hop juice to notice as a new brewer. Besides, you might like Edworts Pale Ale better with the amount you end up with. Just fill a pot, boil for a while, drink while doing it, and add enough cold water to have 5 gals. Fond memories of cooking wort on the kitchen stove make me want to whip up an extract batch. You'll be fine. Just remember, cleanliness is next to godliness. Keep everything used after the boil spotless.

Add about 1/2 of your extract later in the boil, 20 minutes left or so. Will make up the hops utilization that you lose with less than a full boil. Also reduces malliard reactions from hapening that darken your wort and may provide a certain twang from the extract

Yes, I totally value your opinion!! Just wanted to get all info that I could. I will proceed with the brew and thanks for everyone's input. dkershner, nice pick up on Teufelhunden. Oh, and would it be ok to add the Irish Moss @ 15?

I'm bottling my extract version of EdWorts Haus Pale as we speak. I opted out of the Munich LME out of pure laziness and also did a partial boil. Tasted my hydrometer sample today and mmMMboy! Can't wait till this one comes of age.

If you're making a 5 gal batch w/ extract it is OK to boil 4 gal and then top it of with water.
Enjoy your home brew dude! :D
