I wanted a chalkboard tap handle, but after seeing the price of ~$39, I figured I'd try and make one. It took me about 45 minutes total, including the time it took me to figure things out and fix a few errors with the block top. I ended up using a router on the block, but it came with a design that I could've used - so all you really need is a miter saw, drill and hammer to do this.
The parts list is below, as found at Lowes and Home Depot. All that is missing is a wood stain/paint and chalkboard paint (pint can around $13), but I'd have a lot left over.
Overall I think it came out really well and plan to make 3 more, 2 are for a friend who said he'd buy them for $25 - not bad I think.
3/8"-16, 3-Prong Tee Nut
5/16" x 2-1/2", Dowel Screw
15-1/4" Country Pine Table Leg
15/16" x 3-3/4" x 6" Pine Block
Total: $14.40
