I'm bidding on a 20-gallon aquarium that comes with the pump and heater and all. It's pick-up only in Kansas City, KS, so I doubt there'll be a huge bidding war.

The nice thing is, my kids raise hedgehogs and they need another one of these for a cage. I'd get to play with cobbling up the heater and the pump (if it's clean enough) for brew gear, and everybody's happy, including SWMBO, who will think I did this mostly for the kids ;)

You're going to have to put on a good act by taking the heater and pump and saying, "well.. I guess this thing can go in the garage in the junk box."

Wait a few days, then suddenly have a "eureka" moment and announce that you could probably salvage that junk for your brewing.

Unfortunately, SWMBO already knows about the aquarium pump for aeration idea, because she saw it in action and asked about it when I brewed at a friend's house a couple weeks ago. (She'll just roll her eyes at the fact that I'll have to buy a filter and a stone if the one with the pump is too dirty or otherwise insufficient.)

But I'll definitely play dumb about the water bath/aquarium heater idea. I've been married almost 20 years--I may be dumb but I'm not stupid.

My two kettles came off Ebay and it was a pick-up only deal. I got them for something like $65 each and they threw in two little 5 gallon kettles as well. I mean a 60 and 40 gallon steam kettle for under $150?! As a matter of fact, everything on my rig, except for the frame came off Ebay.

Two kettles, mash tun, two chillers, stainless pump, triclover hop-back/filter, fittings, propane burners, casters. All for about $550. Hell, I almost spent that on the bolts to hold it all together! Man life is good!:ban:

I'm taking my wife's whacko logic and turning it against her for my AG gear. There's another ebay-related thread on here about AG gear in Ohio, and I'm considering buying it. I'm not supposed to buy my gear until August, but....

Persuant to SWMBO's logic, I do not need to talk with her before purchasing, nor do I have to tell her how much I spent on it, nor does it matter that I am buying it three months earlier than planned.

I simply have to say, "It was on sale," or, "It was a good bargain."

And that is supposed to make everything OK.

Go for it. That is my advice as your spiritual advisor. Now you can tell your wife your pastor told you to do it. Think of it as an investment in things of the spirit. I will let you define spirit.

Good luck with that. And let us know how you enjoy celebacy. :p

I'm already ALMOST celebate... 5 years of marriage with 2 little kids.

At least this way I would have AG gear. :)

Hmm, fishtanks are dirty places compared to beer brewing equipment. I wouldn't recommend using the used fish stuff in your beer. I have a 55 gal tank and lots of old equipment I'm not currently using but I would not use it for brewing. Also, submersible aquarium heaters need to stay under water all the time else they will shatter immediatly. They also cannot take big changes in temperature. Aquarium pumps are quite inexpensive, so you might look at just buying a new one to ensure it is quiet and clean. Sorry I feel like I'm raining on a parade, but I would hate to see a HB batch ruined due to fish germies (eww).

Wow Pastor, that's one heckuva setup. It looks like an erector set on steroids! :cross: Seriously, it looks awesome.
