No it's not a concern.

#1- You have alcohol in there....

#2- Hops are a natural antiseptic

Think about it this way, if there were a problem, do you think we'd be doing it? ;)

It should be noted though that if you are adding the dry hops in a bag the bag should be sanitized. I drop my hop bag in StarSan while I am measuring out my hops, add the hops to the bag and the bag to the fermenter.

But what if you're not using a bag? ;) I actually do around half and half usually, half of my dry hopping hops in a bag, half on the surface. I dunno why, just seems like better contact to me...whatever. No infection isn't a concern, but sanitizing your bag somehow is a good idea!

Never sanitized my bag, never had a problem. But I may start sanitizing just to be safe.

Although the thought of sanitizing my "bag" sounds intriguing... I usually just pop the pellet hops (loose) in about halfway through the primary and then bottle. I'm not adverse to having some hop particles (floaties) in my beer. However, whatever synthetic materials I drop in my beer, I always sanitize first.

Yeah, I was referring to dry hopping in the keg. I use a bag and whole hops for that. I the fermenter, I use pellets and no bag. Whole hops get a bag, but I have a conical so I don't want it clogged.

The problem on my end is that I ferment in a 7-gallon carboy, and I don't bother racking to secondary. It's near impossible to get 2 ounces of leaf hops through the bung, and that's loose. I tried with a bag, it got the best of me, but I'd really prefer to use one if I could figure it out. Any tips?
