Dry vs. liquid malt extract

Good evening!

I'm just now brewing my first beer that is not from a kit. I used a recipe I found online, but misread it and got 5 pounds of liquid malt extract instead of dry. Will this affect my beer negatively? Should I add it at a different time or change the amount? Or is it basically just the same thing in a different form?

If the recipe was for dry and you have lme your beer will be somewhat weaker. i would guess at under 4% alcohol

Yes, roughly you need 20% more LME to get the same effect as DME. Aside from the beer being a bit weaker it will be fine.

LME is 20% water, so you'll need 20% more to make the same strength beer.

It actually comes in 3.3 lb cans, so I got two. Sounds like with 6.6 lbs I should be okay. Thank you for the help!

The formula is .6 lbs DME equals .75 lbs LME equals I lb base malt.

So yes you will need more extract if you want the recipe to be the same.

edit: the 6.6 lbs is equal to 4.95 lbs DME so you are good.
