So here is my brew day today.

The Hispainola Special
10 Gallons

15 lbs. Pale 2-row
4 lb 4 oz. Flaked Barley
2 lb 4 oz. Roasted Barley

Mash in 152- 90minutes
Mash out 164

4oz Fuggles-60 minutes

Half being aled at 64 degrees with WLP 004 Irish Ale(1 liter starter)
Half being lagered at 54 degrees with WLP838 S. German Lager(2.5 Liter starter)

This is suppose to be somewhat of a Guinness Clone, however I made it stronger (Expected OG suppose to be 1.055), I had Fuggles on hand and I am using those instead of E.K.Goldings, I am not adding anything for the famous Guinness sour (I love that, however I am just wanting a smooth roasty stout right now), and obviously the lager half is different.

I have heard of people using a coffee grinder to finely grind the roasted barely and add it at mashout time so I am going to give that a go today and see how it goes.

other than that I am typing this as Gandalf is battling the Balrog falling into the abyss...wow thats powerful

I tell you what I am about ready for this mash to be over, I am having real bad stuck recirculation issues...I don't really know what happened but I have never had a problem with it. Herms settup

This may have been one of my worst brewdays unfortunately, because I did a few bone headed things

So I've heard of people double milling there grain and thought I would give that a try. I believe that is what cause my stuck mash while recirculating. It was either that or....

I miss-measured my mash water (Lord of the rings was too good) and mashed with 9 gallons of water vrs the 7 I was suppose too, i have never had that mistake so it easily could have been that as far as having the stuck mash.

Well I am finally cooling, and really the only bad outcome was that my efficiency was pretty low. Ended with 1.047 because of that. Hopefully fermentation will not have so many hiccups

Brewing and my golf game have a lot in common. I can go everything perfect... just not all in one brew/hole.

That's what I thought too, and got I worked 12 days with only one off so I needed a good few days (I work at lowes so my "weekend" rotates).
I'm a little disappointed in this brew day, but other than the lower alcohol content there shouldn't be much of a flavor difference

still sounds like a good beer! I mash in a mash tun with a bag, and have yet to have a stuck sparge.

that or I don't notice if i do... either way, your day may have been bad, but it's still going to be beer :)

I've thought about mashing in a bag, the false bottom is really annoying

i like to save money, but spend it where needed.

cooler, Lowes has them on clearance, the handles are the only difference, for like 27 dollars. (near me)
stainless valve and bulkhead aliexpress 12.50 (shipped)
brewbag from "the brew bag" was 30. I am very happy with the brewbag. the extra strong straps makes is so worth it. quality is good, easy to clean.

so my 10 gallon mash tun has $69.50 into it. it has done around 10 batches, no issues at all. all beer has turned out pretty good.

Yeah I mash in a keggle with a false bottom, but I am really considering adding a diptube to the bottom and setting a mash bag in that, easier to clean

So all and all i am very please with how both of these turned out despite the hiccups with it. I don't know if I will ever do the ground up roasted barley again...this does taste a little over the top roasty to me (I have done this recipe before a few times as well, The roast just taste much stronger)

The lager is great too! a lot like the stout but much cleaner, drier, and it is not on nitro like the stout is.

hopefully my next brew (a dope IPA recipe I made and am very excited about) I'll get the right measurements when mashing...
