Dry Hopping question

After researching the forums for the timing and particular methods of dry hopping my conclusion is that there are many many ways to accomplish this from simple to rather complex and no one dry hopping method is the "right" way.

Is that an accurate analysis?

I like simple and my plan was an ounce of hop pellets dumped in the carboy about a week before bottling. A little sanitized mesh over the auto siphon intake and proceed as normal. Worth a try?

I did something similar, used a plastic mesh bag over the siphon and didn't get any hops in my bottling bucket. I also dry hopped for 3rd week of primary. Came out smelling and tasting awesome.

The quantity for dry hopping depends on the recipe.

Whole cones are better than pellets for dry hopping (easier to filter when siphoning and no need to sanitise bags etc).

I chuck them straight into the fermenter after initial fermentation has died down and leave it like that before racking into my bottling bucket a week later.

There are no hard and fast rules. People are likely to disagree with me. Experiment and find what works.

You are correct on both counts - there are as many methods as there are brewers, ranging from simple to crazy complicated, and yes your plan is a sound one. Try it out that way, and next time you make it try somethingelse to see how it compares.

I have tried dumping stuff, nibs and crushed coffee beans, in my "carboy", and was going to use a paint strainer bag on the end of my auto siphon, but found that the mesh bag wouldn't fit down in the opening. Now if I would have cut the bulk of the material off and use fishing line or something to tight around the opening where it would touch the siphon, I hope that makes sense, then it might have worked better. Man I just sanitize a fine mesh, small, hop bag, and tight to the bags tie string with some fishing line, drop it in, replace the bung and tied the extra fishing line to my carboy carrying handle. When the time comes I just pull it out and siphon without worry.

I used to bag my dry hops, right up until I didn't. Try it without the bag, it's easier and I haven't ever had trouble racking off the trub/hops before. Granted I can easily cold crash so your results may vary.
