I read somewhere that higher alpha acid hops aren't as good for dry hopping. I was planning on using simcoe hops with 12.2% AA for dry hopping an amber ale. Has anyone used Simcoe hops with success? Should I try some other type? Also, does the flavor and aroma from dry hopping degrade over time in the bottle?

Thanks!

I love simcoe for dryhopping! Some of the high AAU hops don't have great aroma or flavor, but simcoe does.

It does fade with time. Older dryhopped beers lose quite a bit of the "nose".

Good to know. I'll definitely go with the Simcoe then. I read that the aroma in the bottle will stay for around 4-6 months before it really goes down hill. Is that a good estimate?

go nuts with it....actually some hops are very good for aroma but can give you wierd results if used extensively for flavoring. Summit comes to mind...a very high alpha hop with nice tangerine aroma...but can give onion flavor!

All of my favorite commercial IPAs are dry hopped with Simcoe (Pliny, Sculpin IPA, Duet...). And my homebrew. I just love the piney aroma. Works great with Amarillo as well. Simcoe + Amarillo for late editions and dry hopping = awesome combination IMO.

if it smells great, use it. I love simcoe dry hop as well as chinook, columbus, summit in the dry hop, they are all high alpha and are great for dry hopping.
