so today i bottled a brown ale. I had some hops from my plant this year so I took a few bottles and put 3 smaller hop cones in the bottle filled it up and capped it.

I did it because, I well I wanted to see what would happen.

Anyone ever try this?
 
Only thing I would worry about is the often talked about soapy flavor from prolonged hopping.
 
There's a commercial beer called Lupulin Maximus that does that. I thought it was good.
 
I did It with 3 bottles so I think I will try them at different times, and keep notes on it.

I want to try that Lupulin Maximus and see what its like.
 
It's from O'So Brewing in Wisconsin - they might have a limited distribution area. But other breweries have to do that trick too.
 
I have heard of this too. Never got to try a beer like it bit it sounds interesting. Worth spending a few beers on to experiment.
 
Just warn guests before they pour a bottle. I imagine a big soggy hop cone plopping into the glass would be quite a shock if you're not expecting it. The ones that fell out of the Lupulin Maximus I had looked kinda like butterfly pupae or something like that.
 
I remember seeing one on youtube months ago in a clear bottle filled with hops. It was such a high IBU beer they gave the guy 1tsp & it damn near blew his ears off!
 
I'm interested to see what happens with this. I know the rule of thumb of bottles is 3 weeks at 70 degrees and a 3 week dry hop would probably leave the dreaded soapy/grassy flavor in it. Since it's just 1 cone it might not leave the off taste though. I've never had the Lupulin Maximus but apparently it's pretty good from what I'm reading here. Let us know how it turns out!
 
a little update on my bottle dry hop so far I bottled it on oct 14 so its almost been a month.

I really like it so far it was a brown ale now with the bottled hops it is like a hoppy brow ale IPA thing I think it turned out great

I really wish i did it with more bottles only got 1 more think ill give it another month and try the last one
 
I have done this, with no additional flavor noted. I tried 2 or 3 pellets even, I think, and nothing. I did get a little more sediment for my trouble though.

My latest batch, I gave a couple bottles some home-grown leaf hops. I'm hoping to try one tomorrow if I can shake this cold. I'll post the results.
 
Hmmm. Has anyone tried putting one hop pellet into a bottle?

That's what I hoped, with the pellets, but it didn't do anything as far as I could tell.

At our BJCP study class all participants had to give a themed presentation. The lady who presented "Hops" had 2 cases of 12oz bottles of a commercial Kolsch infused with different varieties of hop pellets. The aroma and flavor contributions were definitely quite there, some more palatable than others. Motueka and Nelson Sauvin were among the most aromatic and drinkable, while a few others, Columbus, Cluster, IIRC, very harsh and bitter, beyond anyone's expectation. I think she used 2-4 pellets per bottle, depending on size.

I think the experiment was very successful with the only major distraction that each pouring had a significant amount of hop pulp in it, which had to be drank past to get to the enjoyment.
 
Well I have still have that cold, but also poor self control, so I popped a bottle that I had stuffed some leaf hops into, probably about one cone worth. It was a little difficult to poor- I ended up using a knife to filter as I poured. Made a little more head, but no big deal.

The added aroma was apparent right away and it seemed as though there was more flavor too, although it's been a week since I had the "regular" bottle of this. I'd consider this a success.

Problem is, the hops I used were given to me and the person had basically harvested cascade and chinook together for some reason, so I'm not really sure what hop I'm using at a given time. Luckily those are two of my favorites and I don't care.

Just had a second bottle that had about two cones worth of leaf hops in it. It foamed over right after opening, but didn't cause too much damage. The flavor was amazing compared to those that had not been bottle hopped, so I'd say the experiment went well. Just not sure what caused the foam over- maybe an infection from the home grown leaf hops? Or something else?
 
So why not use a tea bag that contains both the hops and a sanitized weight of some sort?

A local growler filler sales "hop shots" for 99c. Tea bag of pellet hops. It does add some aroma.

I've tried pellets before with lackluster results. Plus, this may still cause a foam over.
 
I'd say the added hops created nucleation points for the Co2 & foamed over because of that.


Sounds reasonable. Funny thing was, the foam pushed the hops right out of the bottle for me, so it actually worked out well in a weird way.
