Hello all,

I’m going to brew a hazey New England IPA soon and I’m curious if I should dry hop in a bag or not? I guess same goes for the boil too? The recipe I’m looking at is MoreHaze from MoreBeer and it has 12.5oz of Hops!!

Thanks,
Lorne

Depends on your setup. I hop in a bag during the boil because I'm paranoid I'm going to clog my pump. I don't use a bag when I dry hop.

I usually go commando. But I'm not using pumps or plate chiller that could potentially get clogged. So it's pretty set up specific but I like giving them free reign of the beer.

If you're using pellets, then the bag won't do much unless it's pretty fine. If you're using whole leaf, then I'd highly suggest bagging them.

I saw a study on Scott Janish’s website that found a 50% decrease in hop extraction when bagged. Further, dry hopping during active fermentation is critical to the NEIPA style (check out “biotransformation”). Add hops directly to fermenter - half on day 1, half on day 5 or so
