I brewed this today with a recipe significantly derived from an HBT thread, Redhook 8-4-1 Expedition Strong Brown American Ale Clone

Recipe Type: Partial Mash
Style: Imperial Brown
Yeast: Dry English Ale WLP007
Batch Size (Gallons): 5.25
Original Gravity: 1.097 calculated
Final Gravity: 1.024 predicted
SRM: 33.49 calculated
IBU: 57.6 calculated
ABV: 9.56 calculated
Primary Fermentation (# of Days & Temp): 14 days @ 68F
Bottle conditioned: 21 days
First taste 24 January 2015

45 minutes steep at 155F
1.0 lbs Munich 10 (Briess Organic)
10 oz Chocolate (Briess Organic)
8 oz C-60L (Briess Organic)
7 oz White Wheat (Rahr)
7 oz Cherrywood Smoked (Briess)
4 oz C-120 (Briess Organic)

60 minute boil
9.45 lbs Light Malt Syrup (Northern Brewer Organic)
1.0 oz Crystal (60 min)
0.5 oz Nugget (60 min)
0.5 oz Warrior (60 min)
0.5 lbs Dark Muscavado Sugar (15 min)
1.0 oz US Sterling (15 min)
1.0 oz Willamette (15 min)
1.0 oz Cascade (5 min)
1.0 lb Honey (Shamrock Apiaries) (5 min)

This is from my experiment slot. I have never made a brown, and this Redhook one-off was the best brown I have ever tasted. I found the thread back in 2010. Then it took four years for this brew to move to the front of my queue. 8-4-1 is a perverse beer to brew because "8-4-1" meant eight brewers making four brews blended into one. But the thread provided enough clues and advise to fiddle with to get to the target SRM, IBU and ABV. A sad issue is that, as a one off, I do not have an original to compare.

A Macon growler shop, Just Tapp'd, has starting carrying home-brew supplies and is now my first LHBS. I bought the Cascade and Crystal hops to support Just Tapp'd. The other hops, yeast and two non-organic malts were not in stock. SWMBO prefers organic, so excepting leftover Nugget at home, the rest of the order came from Northern Brewer.

After four years since tasting the original, I cannot remember enough to say this is a good clone. But this is a good and interesting beer; worth brewing again but for that my brew queue is too long. I am happy that I brewed this.
