Driving across the country with my dad. Brewery input wanted for our route.

So my dad is 71 this year and we have decided to drive from Palm Springs CA to Atlanta GA together. CAN YOU SAY ROAD TRIP!
I have not been that this route but we are planning for 8-days on the road. WE ARE GONNA TAKE OUR TIME!
So a little help would be KILLER from those of you that have been to these towns along the way any KILLER Diners Drive in and DIVES joints , Breweries and/or Distilleries I NEED TO HIT? I would love to hear about them.

OUR ROUTE:
We are leaving Palm Springs on I-10 Picking up I-20 just past El Paso
Headed toward Dallas TX where we hit I-30 to Little Rock and hit I-40 towards Nashville. From Nashville to Atlanta on 24 and 75.

We are NOT in a hurry and are willing to change course any step of the way. Any killer spots that are a MUST HIT along those routes?

Outside the perimeter near Stone Mountain is a little hole in the wall called Naked Cat Brewery that would be honored to serve you any swill on tap and put you and your father up for the night.

Sounds like a fun trip. If you're into music, particularly blues, I'd highly recommend stopping in Memphis for a night and staying downtown (I always stay at the Springhill Suites on Main St.). Walk down to Beale Street and hit up the Blues City Café for some awesome BBQ and a brew and then catch some live blues at one of the clubs on Beale (BB King's is always great). Beale St. at night is something to experience.

I drive I30 and I40 through Arkansas often. Many (All?) of the counties outside from Little Rock are dry counties. Little Rock itself has some places to stop, and Arkansas has some natural beauty for sure, but pretty much that whole route is a miss.

I hope you have a great time. Near the middle of Dallas just off of I-30 is a awesome gastro pub with an amazing beer selection called Mettlesome Moth. Also if you have time you can check out the Dealey plaza where JFK got shot it's nearby. Enjoy your trip.

Arkansas is very strange. Liquor laws are highly varied, from county to county and city to city.

I live in a dry county, yet one of the county seats is wet. Yep, we have counties with two county seats.

Heading north, you pass through a dry county, then two counties full of craft breweries. South from here, it's dry all the way to Texas.
To the east is wine country.

Little Rock and Hot Springs have a number of local breweries. Even craft distilleries. East of there, well, I just don't know. It's all different when you leave the mountains. I try not to.

So it's not as bad as Yooper said, and getting better all the time.

If you really want to see this country, get off the interstate. Take US 70, 64, or 62 across Arkansas, for example. Each a different experience, and sooo much more relaxing than the I40 superslab. You did say you are not in a hurry? Neither are we.

On Tucson - Tap and Bottle is outstanding, but my favorite brewery when I moved from Tucson to MD (Jan 2015) is Dragoon Brewery, about 1 mile W of I-10 on Grant Rd.

In Memphis - Flying Saucer Draught Emporium. On the drive to MD, I stopped a night in Memphis, a HS friend took me around Beale St. (check out the live music there while in town), stopped in Flying Saucer first - great beer selection.

Agreed, the Flying Saucer has a great tap list and is well worth a visit. Also, check out High Cotton Brewing. They have some good brews.

So we ended up staying in Phoenix last night and went to Mother Bunch brewing. We got out a little later than expected and just having a good time in Palm Dessert off road. I think we are going to stop in Tucson for lunch a the Dragoon then continue on to El Paso.

Don't know which way you'll be heading the Athens, but if its out Hwy 78 this is a great hole in the wall BBQ joint. http://bigdaddyque.com The Fat Matt sandwich is........I mean what's not to love about a pulled pork sandwich topped with house made pimento cheese!

If Dragoon doesn't have a food truck, just down the street, NW corner of Grant and Silverbell (on the hill behind the McD's) is Mosaic Cafe - GREAT mexican food. Mole chicken is killer.

We stopped in Ft Worth TX yesterday and hit up 2 of the local breweries Chimera and Hopfusion. Really cool places hung out with some of the owners and brewers. We got our Brewery passport and got a couple stamps..LOL
