I’m curious at what point this doesn’t work well. For instance if I have a little more than 4 oz of hope for dry hopping a 5.25 gal batch would it serve me well to split it? How much is needed to make an impact vs keeping it all in one?

And when splitting what are considered the better timeframes? And do you leave the initial hops too? What are you doing and noticing?

For the neipa style beers I brew I do two rounds of dry hops, 3 ounces each (3 different strains, like Citra/Mosaic/Simcoe) per five gallons. I do the first round 48 hours post-pitch, go 3 days then add the second, and go four days before cold-crashing under very light (0.4 psi) CO2 pressure.

I've been considering holding off the second round until after a light crash (say, to 50°F for 24 hours) to drop most of the yeast first, as has been frequently suggested in other threads. When the next neipa comes up in the schedule I'll do five gallons in that manner and the other half "old style", and see if/how they differ...

Cheers!

I personally like double dryhoping versing one dryhoping but I also dryhop at a rate of at least 1-1.5 oz per gallon. I feel by splitting them up I get better extraction since more of the hop material is actually in contact with the beer. Think surface area. There is a scientific correlation between increased surface area and increased extraction. Say you dumb in 6 oz at once, much of that dryhop will not actually be in contact with the beer until the hops particles start to drop out of suspension. By splitting them more hops are in contact for longer

I use pellets probably 98% of the time for dry hopping for the same reason. At the rates an neipa calls for that'd be a lot of hop material sitting proud of the actual beer if using whole cones. With pellets I can rock the carboys just enough to submerge the pellet mush a few times each day. When it's time for cold-crashing nearly all of the mush is submerged just below the surface as the CO2 evolution comes to an end...

Cheers!

So you both use a bit more hops for dry hopping (I typically buy 1/2 lb packages), but it sounds like you’d both split these I have.

I personally would. I never do a single dryhop over 4oz. No scientific evidence why but it’s worked well for me through experience.

NEIPA I dry hop twice . Exactly how day trippr does it . I only dry hop once for west coast IPA . I have seen double dry hopped ipas though. My question is could someone really tell the difference of a ddh of 2 oz each or single dh of 4 oz ? Could using a bag influence it as well ? I try and open my fermenter as little as possible.
