Well this is freaking amazing.

first off it's 9% and it is very quaffable, not as bitter is sierra nevada....but the bitterness does kick up a bit in the after taste. It's spicy and citrusy like a pale and the after taste has a bitterness that would merit an IPA.

Any time I read double this, or double that I expect a meal in a bottle but this beer is easily drinkable at 9% and VERY smooth. $7.99 a bottle so make sure you harvest the pacman to make it worth it.

I am interested in the double pilsner now. I bought the imperial so a review on that in a bit.

it just came out the other week. Only one beer shop had it in phoenix and I got the last one. $9 a bottle but I am harvesting the yeast for it.

You know I wasn't impressed, sure it was smooth and all but for $13 a bottle I can think of things I would rather drink. I'm not saying it was bad but it just didn't have anything exceptional that stood out in my mind when I was drinking it. The bottle is cool though.

My beer-geek buddy at work told me that one of the bars in Syracuse at Blue Tusk. I haven't gotten down there to try it myself, but he thought it quite tasty.

My friend liked this so much that he ordered a case of it! Of course there was a bomber with my name on it (we have a great deal going: I give him great homebrew & he gives me great craft brews that are not easy to find around here!)

I cracked it open last night and poured it into an oversized wine goblet. I really enjoyed it but it wont be my everyday drink. Rogue's website lists it as a strong ale. I was looking forward to harvesting some Pacman from this but it does not seem to be bottle conditioned. I reserved the last ½" and swirled it around to mix and when I poured it into a jar, it was clear... Oh well, it was still a nice brew.

We just got it in today at the store. Im not impressed. It is very drinkable at 9%, Has a nice bitterness, and the after taste is ok. Nice body, not much from the malt going on. Its getting better as it gets a little warmer. A good beer but I can definately think of something else to spend my money on. Especially since we are selling it for $18.99 a bottle!!! Yea. I get it for $13.00 roughly, but thats still alot. At cost its like $12.00 and some change. I might like it a little more if it only cost $7.99 here.

$8.99 too at John's Grocery in Ia City but it was on sale (like 5-6.99) last month when I got one to try. Wish I had bought a case!

We had a firgin cask of it last week, but our pub was virtually empty. End result, I brought home a growler of it for the price of the empty glass.

I think its far, far better than regular dead guy. Granted, it isn't the most complex beer, but a silky, smooth 9% beer is hard to find. As the carbonation dropped down on the growler it really became an almost honey-like ambrosia.

I also had it from a firkin at the Eugene City Brewers. $3.00 for a pint (Firkin Monday's!) Very nice served that way. I followed that up with a pint of Glen.

Really? I found the SA Pilsner strange at best.

Does anyone have a clone recipe for this yet? I see it in stores around here but at $10 it's kinda tough to justify. Interesting looked at Rogue's site and it uses different grains and hops! Instead of Perle and Saaz they use cascade hops.

Austin Homebrew has a clone kit for Double Dead Guy.

It is Cascade and something else, I have already forgotten. I had mine the other night, and it is downright delicious! The bitterness only comes through in the very first drink - everything after that is like citrus punch in a beer. Orange and tangerine and grapefruit and lemon, with a delicious warming malt background faintly shining through. Very clean, and so so clear.

Edit: Rogue's site just says Cascade. I swear there was another variety on the label though. Hmmm. I'll look @ it tonight.

Did some looking on AHS but could only find regular dead guy and not the double.

The ingredients for double dead guy are drastically different than regular dead guy. Still can't see how they charge so much for it.

Malt: 2 row, munich, c15
Hops: Boiling - Cascade (because I was out of Perle)
Aroma - Crystal (because I was out of sterling)
Specs: 19.8 Plato O.G. / 4.9 Plato T.G. / 50-60 IBUs

Here's the info from the Rogue site:

Style: Strong Ale
Deep amber copper color. Buttery peanut brittle, orange blossom tea aromas follow through tot a rich chewy and fruity full body with nice notes of caramel drizzled dried apricot and roasted grains and spice. Finishes with a long, tangy grilled grapefruit and chocolate fade.

6 Ingredients:
Malts: 2-Row, Munich and C15.
Hops: Cascade.
Yeast & Water: Rogue's Pacman Yeast and Free Range Coastal Water.

Specs:
20º PLATO
60 IBU
78 AA
25º Lovibond

OK, so I'm playing around with BeerSmith... (I can't find a recipe out there)

I came up with this. NO clue if it's close. But it matches the specs, for the most part.

10# Pale
5# Munich 20˚L
2# Cara 15˚L (Great Western Malting)

2.5oz Cascade @ 0:60
1oz Crystal + .75oz Cascade @ 0:20
1oz Crystal + 1oz Cascade @ 0:05
(Used default AA% in BeerSmith of 5.5% Cascade, 3.5% Crystal.)

Mash at medium temp, I'd say 150˚F, and then ferment with a strong culture of Pacman. Shooting for nearly 80% Attenuation.

The above recipe gives OG 1.082 (dead on), FG 1.021 (2 points high, hopefully Pacman will help that), color 15.4 SRM (I couldn't even FORCE it to get close to 25 SRM!!), and 60.3 IBUs.

Feedback?

From what I tasted, there was a SIGNIFICANT bitterness evident in the first couple drinks, that is why I did such a large bittering charge at 0:60.
