I was bored and tried something unusual. Since I really like the taste of molasses, I mixed wome with warm water, to 1.05 SG. Then added nottingham ale yeast. It was fermenting very slowly if at all, so I threw in some bread yeast since that is all I had on hand. In a few more days it finished up at 1.005, about 5% abv.

It is an interesting brew, strongly tastes of molasses, but with a little fizz. I am not sure what if I would do it again, but I am enjoying a glass now.

Sounds interesting. I like molasses quite a bit for grilling. Might be fun to try. What amounts did you use to get to 1050?

I don't remember, I just wrote down the SG. Also, since I was really unsure, I just did a 1 qt jar. So it was only 4 or 5 tsp.

I like the Apple juice idea. I got a refractometer from Santa so this might be a fun way to monkey with it.

I'm pretty sure that's how you start making rum. You just need the distilling and aging part now.

I might try it with 1 part Molasses, 1 part apple juice, and 1 part malt extract. It could be interesting. And hey, its only a qt so no big loss if I just toss it.
