So I just brewed my very first extract batch tonight and I just want to know if this looks wrong to anybody?? I was going for an IPA that was really hoppy and bitter... ImageUploadedByHome Brew1406421756.625344.jpg

How much hops and did you pour all of the kettle into the fermenter without filtering?

Edit: Is that one gallon?

Only things I'd highlight would be 1) possibly insufficient headspace if your fermentation is vigorous and 2) I've started leaving the trub out of the primary whereas it seems you've dumped everything in. I never had an issue with dumping everything from the kettle into the primary but ever since I've started throwing more adjuncts into my beers I'm reading more about how some adjuncts if left in the primary too long can produce unwanted flavors. Look into whirlpooling.

Otherwise, congratulations. Looks goods.

1 oz centennial
1 oz cascade
1 oz Australian galaxy
And no like a ******* I forgot to filter it

But other than not filtering the wort into the filter and using maybe a few to much hops, it looks somewhat ok??

Good luck cleaning that mess up tomorrow...

What he means is that you have hardly any head room for fermentation to occur without plugging the airlock. Without a blowoff tube that sucker will blow that airlock and bung right out of that jug along with about 1/3 of your wort on anything it's sitting on and most likely blow hop material into the wall/ceiling.
Drop in a blowoff tube ASAP.
Also it looks like you dumped most of your hot break into the jug with the hops. No biggie, but the lack of a blowoff tube is your bigger concern than that hot break.

Wow, 3 ounces in a 1 gallon batch is A LOT! Even half that would be a really hoppy IPA. What was your recipe?

post pics of that tomorrow and let's take another gander at it.

Just tried to wing an IPA recipe but not sure if I did or not.. Doesn't sound like I nailed anything with some of these responses so far. I'll be sure to send a pic tomorrow though! I just put my blow out tube in the stop just in case it decides to build up to much pressure

You're going to get something interesting.

...Could be good, could be bad. We'll just have to see what that means.

Ok so I woke up this morning and here is what is going on in the fermentor. View attachment 213779

Looks like you have fermentation going on which is good. Keep a CLOSE eye on that blowoff tube and for any airlock blockage . If that airlock at the bottom part(in the jug)gets any hop blockage..kaboom she will go.
I would be interested in seeing what comes of this myself. Most likely a very good hoppy DIIPA.
