I'm converting a boiler into a mash tun and wanted to know whether it is important that my false bottom have a stand or whether a regular domed false bottom will work just as well?

You can't buy them with stands in the UK which means having to make one.

Thank you.

For your boil kettle it is not 100% neccasary. For a mash tun if you do a big grain bill you may end up having your false bottom cave in to the weight of the grain. If you look at the false bottoms on Norcalbrewingsolutions.com you will see an idea of an easy stand to be made. Jaybirds false bottoms are unbelievable I use one in my boil and mash tun with great success. He might be able to send you one.

Not sure what kind of false bottom you are talking about, but no amount of grain could crush it. Hell, I'd bet I could stand on it and it wouldn't "cave in". A dome is an incredible support structure.
