Do I need to serial mash a quaqer oats?

Hi All
My recipe calls for Flaked Oats, and I don't have it anywhere in my country, if I use regular Quaker oats do I need to cereal mash it? Or just dump it in the mash with all the other grains?

In with the rest of the grain.

Oats alone won't convert. It needs to be mashed with other grains that have diastatic powers.

Diastatic power is the enzyme powers of the malt...its ability to break down starches into smaller chains, or simple sugars that can be fermented.

So should it be better to cereal mash it with some of the grains before the main mash or there is no need? I'm asking because I know for example if I substitute regular wheat instead of Flaked one I must serial mash it just wanted to know if this is the case with oats also?

You do a cereal mash to gelatinize the starch in unmalted grain by heating above a certain temperature. This is necessary because the gelatinization temperature is higher than the mash saccharification temperature. Flaked/torrefied grain has already undergone that process, so you can add directly to the mash tun at regular mash temperatures.

Also instant oats = flaked oats. I believe Quaker makes both instant and regular, so make sure you get the one you want.
 
Right in the mash. Quaker oats is flaked oats. Or you'll hear it called rolled oats, and that too is flaked oats.
