Well, I did my first yeast starter today. Really excited because I think my previous poor tasting brews were yeast related.

I learned a valuble lesson, that is you need everyone out of your hair while you brew. Trying to brew while watching a 7 month old is a bad idea. (my wife was home as well)

I made the below mistakes:

Allowed a boil over....many hops floated over the top as I ran to my brew kettle.

Forgot the flame out hop addition (trying to rush). And added them at about 150 degrees....hopefully no infection from the hops. I am cooling down via ICE Bath so they will have some time to hang in there.:smack:

Does this batch have a chance? The plus side is my yeast starter. I decanted this A.M. and topped with Fresh wort so they are super happy.

Thanks Duboman, that or cough up money for a new purse lol.

Think infection is likely having pitched the flame out hops at 150 degrees? Will those hops add any aroma or flavor at such a low temp?

Ever hear of dry hopping? ;)

You'll be fine - no worries on the infection vector, and you'll definitely get some aroma addition from those hops, if maybe a little less flavor than you might have right at flameout.

That's nothing! I just lost 3/4 gal of my first runnings cause I left the BK valve open and went inside the house after starting my fly sparge. I've got the hockey game on inside and I figured since my valves on the HLT and MLT were adjusted perfect (16oz/minute) I had plenty of time to watch some hockey. Luckily I came out to check on things after 13 minutes.

Don't worry about your beer. With that yeast starter, fermentation should start quick in which case you won't have to worry about adding your hops when you did. As far as your boilover, so you lost a little bit of hops. It might not be as bitter as you'd like, but it'll still be beer and plenty drinkable. RDWHAHB

Hops are rather antiseptic. That is why people do not bother to do anything to sanitize them before dry hopping. You are fine. RDWHAHB

Normally dry hops are added after the pH has gone down and there is a fair amount of alcohol in the beer. That said, I'm guessing you will still be ok.

RDWHAHB!
