Hey,
I'm pretty new to mead making but not brewing. There is a ton of information on this forum and everywhere else but a lot of it is contradicting. Before I bottled my second batch, I shook the gallon jug with the air lock on and waited for the bubbles to stop. I did this several times. Did this degas the mead? Can degassing be accomplished by shaking the the mead with an airlock on?
 
I have only done it a few times, but ideally you want to swirl, not simply shake for degassing. By shaking/splashing, you could be redissolving gas into the mead.
Yes, you do it with the airlock on. To take it off increases exposure to oxygen, which you want to avoid.
 
With my one gallon batches, I pick up the jug and swirl it one direction, then abruptly switch directions to get it some agitation. With bigger batches I do it in a bucket, and I use a large spoon to mix it. Do that a few times until it’s not foaming so heavily. The ideas isn’t just to get the gas to come out of solution, but to keep the yeast from settling on the bottom.
