+1 more. TBH, one of the reasons I DON'T become a paying member is BECAUSE I am blocked from that forum. I'm too tempted sometimes, not being able to get in forces me to stay out.

Same here. Drama, debate and bullsh*t is what Facebook is for. I come here to learn about brewing and brew-related things, and enjoy the "company" of fellow HBers.

Wow, let's slow down a bit here. There is no reason to judge a person by how much he or she spends on brewing. Let's consider that participating in these forums does NOT constitute actually being able to brew.

Suppose you were flat broke. Suppose that because you were flat broke you could NOT brew beer. Suppose that you still wanted to LEARN about brewing for when you DID have a few $$ in your pocket and can afford that bag of grain, and a few ounces of hops.

HBT is STILL a great place to learn about brewing and preparing for when you CAN actually brew. Lord knows I would like to brew more often (though for me it's not the money, it's the time).

So lighten up on the guy.

Agreed. I didn't think of it that way, I just equate HBT being people who currently brew, and not as an educational hangout for people thinking about getting into the hobby.

My apologies OP, I knew I was being harsh but didn't see it from any other perspective. (that's a really a great thing about the Debate Forum, seeing all the opinions either solidifies your opinions or makes you think twice after seeing others.)

You would enjoy their company less in the debate forum. You can safely hang on to your cash. ;)

Yup, I know. Hence me staying out of it.

Personally, I think politics and religion should be treated like one's penis... don't be waving it around in public or trying to cram it down other peoples' throats.

But.. since I don't subscribe to any of the more popular religious beliefs or political parties, I have very little to add to a debate anyway. :ban:

Regarding the analogy to politics... except the difference is, decisions I make regarding my penis don't affect the laws that govern 300 million people. Just sayin'. (Though that would be pretty cool if my penis were that important...)

In any case, the claim that people ought to keep one's politics and religion to themselves in general (as opposed to specifically in this forum, which is simply the rules) is in itself a political/religious claim -- different political and/or religious views might conflict with that position. I have some very specific thoughts on that topic, and it's killing me keeping them in right now  So we're already verging off into what I now understand to be forbidden territory... Seriously!

You were talking to LGI when you made this analogy? What do you think he likes to use to stir his wort with? :D

Actually, I wasn't... it's something I read somewhere that I post on my FB from time to time when things start getting stupid.. lol

Personally, I can't take the scalding temps, so I use a paddle.. ;-)

Well it looks as if this thread has hit the south bond path and needs to be either cleaned up or locked down. :(

I didn't know that was a paid member thing.. haven't looked at it... not a paid member either... That's 1 more reason to become a paid member (which I plan to do at some point but leaving it out there past my birthday to give the chance for it to be gifted to me! my birthday is July 29th btw) lol yea.. I'll pay eventually.. I use the site too much not too.

That's the beauty of this site. It is run for profit, for sure, but that aspect in not shoved down our throats with ads to pay for membership, and all members are equally welcome. It's a for profit set up with the feel and benefits of a totally free site.

I am not a paying member, but the thread I started was moved to the debate forum so I cant view any of the discussion now. Seems like if the thread is started by a non-paying member then keep it in an open forum at least.

You're not missing much, and if you care that much about it pay the membership fee, go into the Debate Forum, and throw some mud at your fellow HBT members. You'll find out more about your fellow members than you'd like to know and occasionally lose your faith in humanity.

I emailed them about moving my post, and their response was just "Debates belong in the debate area" and sent me a link to sign up for a subscription even though I posted initially in the General Discussion forum. Guess I wont post topics anymore since it isnt worth it.

Your thread turned political very quickly. We don't allow political debate except within the debate forum. So, your thread required either deletion or relocation. I chose the lesser of two evils. Should you choose to continue posting divisive topics, expect similar results. Mostly, we're here to make good beer. RDWHAHB.

If it's a debate it belongs in the debate forum. That's the reason we set it up. We have to limit it to premium to stop the trolling. Sorry.

I have incorporated it into the rule set so there is no question about the legitimacy of posting debate threads in General Chit Chat.

Thats fine that you want to keep people that dont normally come here from posting, but I would like to at least see the resulting discussion that came out of it since I was the one that contributed the topic......

The debate forum is a strange animal indeed. It's a place where intelligence and wisdom meets head to head with stupidity and ignorance. It turns out that when you mate an idiot with a sage, the offspring is a home brewer! :tank:

well, pay the $25 then.

it's unfortunate when people take general topic threads and add in political stuff, but that's the way it is.

quite honestly I wish the admins would just delete Xpertskir's post and keep it in the open forum. it's an interesting, beer-related discussion.
