Is there a sutible yeast that I could brew a dark lager at and ale temp? I was thinking one of the california strains that tollerate the higher ale temps. I would like to brew a dark lager but do not have a lagering fridge yet. I can cold condition out in my garage but it isn't very consistant and would be around 35* to 40*

This would be called porter or stout...

You could try an expirement and use a kolsch yeast, that might be interesting with the roast grains.

Black Lagers typically aren't all that roasty when compared to stouts. But yeah, you could do this. It would arguably be closer to the style than trying to ale a pilsner.
