I've heard of a few homebrewer's doing 30 minute boils for their strongly hopped IPA's. The idea I gather being that it would maximize aroma/flavour while toning the bitterness down. Just wondering has anybody done anything like this before and what results you had.

Cheers!

Run a search for "hop burst" in this forum. That's the technique you're thinking of- all later additions, to maximize hop flavor. The boil is still at least 60 minutes because the boil has value on its own for creating a clean beer, but you don't start with hops until the last 30 or so. A few have done it. Jamil has an article about it on mrmalty.com with a recipe.

My next beer will be a simcoe IPA with a hop schedule as follows:

1oz 20min
1oz 15min
1oz 10min
1oz 5min
2oz 0min

2oz dry

Half pound of simcoe, 53 IBU.

Not sure this helps, but sometime this week, I'm going to brew a 10 minute IPA, with only a 10 minute boil. When I used to brew extract, I used the "extract late" method and added most of the extract at 10 minutes anyway, so why not backload the hops and only boil for 10 minutes.

Oh...first post, yay!

The supplies for this just came. The good folks at brewmaster's warehouse must have sensed how awesome this is going to be, because they threw in a 9th ounce! Lets make it...2oz at 5min.
