Crystal vs Caramel Malt?

Are they the same thing? They seem to be used interchangably, but want to make sure I'm not missing something.
 
The crystal term is generally used for US and UK malts and caramel for Continental malts. As said above they are basically the same thing although they do not taste quite the same as they are produced from different base malts.

Can you expand on that? I have read that Crystal is just the UK term and Caramel is the yankee term; a nomenclature fissure.
 
Everything I had read says that they are identical. I would be interested in citations that say otherwise.

a quick google search led me to this link. It was the only one that suggested there is a difference, but it didn't seem like the most credible source...
