I have seen, in one of the all grain tutorials, a CPVC gallon mark stick which I really like the idea of but, I wasn't sure what was used to write gallon marks on the stick. Do you use a permanent marker? (Will that writing survive the boil? Is it safe?) I was thinking of notching the stick somehow instead but I'd rather mark it if possible.

I know based on how far from the first handle bolt my level is approximately how much wort I have but it's not accurate enough.

Thanks!

I used a hacksaw to cut notches at 1 gallon and drilled a hole at 1/2 gallons. Then I found it was a pain to count so marked the gallons with a sharpie.

I don't really use it during the boil. If so it is only in for a moment. My boil kettle is marked on the outside with a sharpie which gets me close enough. The stick is mainly used for initial mash and sparge water measurement.
