I just started making my own wine and like to drink wine after work with dinner and a movie, usually 3 large glass (32oz chillable red). I know I drink more than the recommended amount but what in the wine is the unhealthy component, is it the alcohol? If I lower the percent of alcohol down to 4 when I make wine would that be healthier than if I drink the same amount of wine at 10 percent? I don't drink necessarily to get drunk, I just like the taste.

Like the saying "Everything in Moderation". So of course 4% alcohol is going to be healthier than 10%. Alcohol is a toxin that your body needs to process. Just sayin...32oz is quite a bit of wine for one night.

The answer is yes... less ABV is better due to conogers and unwanted alcohols such as 'Heads and Tails' which consist of such things as acetone, ethyl acetate, proponal, isoproponal... the list goes on. basically the less ABV we make the greater the ratio of ethanol (hearts) is to the other alcohols but the more we push the yeast the more of the heads and tails they make as they get stressed. think lower can be 1:4:1 but the more you push it it will turn to 1:2:1 where the middle number is what we want the highest number. stressed yeast isnt happy yeast

Im new to wine making, really new so im not sure on how wine yeast reacts in this enviroment but ive made spirits for years and can tell you less is more. more is less.

but then i like my wine strong, much stronger than i would make whisky ferments so ill be aiming high, but i know in doins so i increase these other alcohols ratio.

Cheers

32 Oz of regular strength wine (12%) is the same as about 5, 6%ABV homebrews. That's a lot of alcohol if you do it every night, and some would say that's excessive.
If you like the taste of wine, reducing the alcohol isn't the answer, because that will change the taste.
My 2 cents: Reduce your wine consumption to by 2/3. If you consumed 10 oz of wine an evening instead of 32 oz, you'll feel better and live longer.
Or, quit drinking all together for a week or two then when you start up again just have some on the weekends.
The fact that you are aware of your alcohol consumption is a good thing, some people don't care or choose not to notice how much they are drinking.
After many years of home brewing including cider and wine, I've switched to drinking 3-4% "session beers" with the occasional higher ABV brew or wine now and then and try to keep it to 2 beers a night or less.
