Thought this a good example of a thorough crush, I use this for BIAB or batch sparging with a braid.

edit...pictures are deceiving, to the eye this looked significantly more crushed, with really no large pieces visible, just lager peices of empty husk, kind of like a coarse sawdust.

The pic looks much coarser than the eye....

Maybe I need glasses :)

I think you need to tighten up that mill. You still have husks that are intact.:D

You'll never get by with a 10 minute mash with that big of grain particles.:mug:
 
OK the results, 8 gallons at 1.056 w/ 14.5 lbs of grain, 83% efficiency. What this little experiment has taught me is that unless you weigh your grain precisely, and measure your volumes very accurately....you are just throwing a dart at the "efficiency" board :)

I actually do neither, just usually figure I need 2 lbs of base malt / gallon to get over 1.055, and make adjustments based on my empirical data points.

Truth be told, I usually don't even measure gravity...shame on me? I typically brew in the 1.050 range and don't care all that much...lazy perhaps?

I don't really even weigh the grain, but have calibrated my water 5 g water bottle hopper on the mill, and post boil volume is merely "eyeballed" with a marked wooden mash paddle. So if the grain was plus minus a half pound, and the finished volume was plus minus a quart, the swing in efficiency is quite large...chasing efficiency would make me crazy....I'm happy with the results I'm getting for the effort put forward. :)

Actually it makes sense to keep it simple. I weigh to get the proportions right then usually add a pound for the inefficiencies. Can people tell the difference between 5.2% and 6% ABV?
