Cooper's DIY lid clips

So I've purchased a Cooper's DIY kit and have just began my first batch of homebrew from a can, which I say for lack of a known term (YAY!). Even if you don't believe in stupid questions, you may be about to find religion; I can't for the life of me figure out how to use the lid clips. Perhaps they're considered such a simple proponent that coopers didn't think it necessary to give a tutorial. I've just slid them on around the krausen collar. without the krausen collar, it seems like there's no way at all to secure the lid. Is this right?

These are designed to secure the Lid and Krausen Kollar together, effectively making them work as the one unit. This prevents the lid from being pushed off by the foam of a particularly aggressive fermentation – an Imperial Stout fermentation, for example.

You can ferment your brew without the Krausen Kollar in place if you like. However, we recommend using the Krausen Kollar because it increases the total headspace, which helps to contain the foam. Also, it catches the deposit made by the foam – once the foam collapses the Krausen Kollar may be removed while the deposit is still soft and moist, then easily cleaned ready for the next brew.
