I've been using my spare bedroom's closet during the winter in SC to keep fermentation temperatures under control. I'm using a cheapo Sunbeam heater with a thermostat. This set-up works quite well, the heater turns on occasionally to maintain apx 66-68F.

It's now mid-March and I'm looking at house temperatures in the high 70's during the upcoming summer (read: in a month!)

I've been tinkering with the idea of using that same closet, but with a sheet of styro to close it, and fitting a 4.0-cuft fridge in a hole cut in the styrofoam for it, and using an aquarium temperature control. The guest room may get to the low 80's in the summer.

Anybody done this? How did it work?

I know it's not the prettiest set-up, but I seldom have guests in my house so it wouldn't be a big concern.

Ive run into the same problem. I was considering something similar. But was gonna buy a new door, cut a hole in it and insert a window unit A/C. I wonder how that'd do

I would search for fridge conversions. There are plenty out there including a "show me" thread of two. A problem you might run into with the closet is the r value of the closet's walls and the volume of air that you would have to cool. I would try to build a chamber before messing with the closet.

The drawback is that I have to find floor space in the house for a chamber. I want to cool 4x 6-gal carboys. I could always insulate the closet....
