No real convincing needed here. My Wife is a Horse Person and has two Thoroughbreds. If you know anything about Horses then you know they are expensive as hell. So she doesn't really have a leg to stand on. With that said, I have been drooling over brew rigs as of late also, and i will just have to piecemeal mine together a little at a time. It would just be unreasonable to go out and drop all that coin at once on a brewstand. But until I get my shop up it's all just a wet dream anyway.

cheers:mug:

Same here man, my SWMBO has two horses(One of which is supposedly mine) and Feed and board can get costly. She spends what I spend, although I went over a couple of times and had to give the balance in cash.(My decision, not hers FYI). I say buy it all at once then get the banter over with in one shot.:ban:

Thats true. Just like pulling a band aid off

Don't get caught up in equipment. You can make top shelf, award winning beer with $150 of coolers/buckets. Concentrate on your process....an expensive rig is good for dick sizing other homebrewers, but the beer will only be as good as brewer him/herself.

Here's a picture of my first AG set up:

Here's a picture of my latest:

The first set up was about $150 worth of "stuff". The second was $2000+.

Which made better beer? Well, I'd say "both". The beer didn't improve with the latest incarnation. What did improve was the convenience of the set up and not stressing my back! (no lifting with the latest set up, but pure brute strengh with the first).

My point is that you can do it piece meal and make awesome beer! Keep a goal in mind, so that you're not purchasing and then repurchasing gear, but you can do a great AG beer with a couple of pots, a burner and a MLT.

I have probably spent 100 bucks on my AG set up. Turkey fryer with 7.5 gallon aluminum pot. 15 gal cooler with a braid. I got a corona mill for free. Oh yeah well I spent 50 bucks on a used starter kit. Came with some extra carboys and stuff. Next is some copper for a chiller. That should pay for itself quickly because I spend 5 bucks on a bag of ice each time.

So how do you guys convince the swmbo into letting you spend thousands on brew equipment? I have a pretty modest setup but I want more obviously. This forum is addicting and dangerous. Every Day I see something and am like I need that! I just can't being myself to tell my wife I want to spend thousands on building a bad ass brew rig.

I certainly can relate to this! My wife doesn't drink beer (or anything worth making at home), appreciates her space... and is an accountant ;-) Here's what I did:

1. Agreed to build some shelving in the garage that would both store her s*it and hide my brewing equipment.

2. Set aside a small "allowance" every month... for BOTH of us, which we can use on anything we choose.

3. Agreed that on brew day, I watch the kids while she spends time doing something she enjoys (pedicure, movie with friend, etc).

4. Most importantly: go in halves with a good friend/brew partner. We split the costs of most everything including kettle, burner, fermentation freezer, kegerator... this has worked out great!

Also, we brew using the batch sparge method, which is relatively inexpensive. And take it easy to start- don't think you have to buy the bet equipment right away. Build as you go.

All the best!!!
