Got a great piece of info for checking OG. I was using a pitcher but was having trouble getting it deep enough for the hydrometer. someone told me the sleeve that the hydrometer comes in is used to put liquid into and works great. How Simple. Just thought I would pass that on. Always learning.

A wine thief works great also and is worth the short money it cost. Much faster and easier.

Ditto. The thief is an awesome bit of gadgetry. Slender, so you don't need to pull more than eight or ten ounces per sample. Just enough to pop in the freezer to chill and then test for flavor.

the online home brew stores sell hydrometer test jars - a bit more durable, wider base, and like $3-4 bucks- next time you place an order.

You don't want to use a pitcher - you'd have to fill that up with a quart or half gallon - and you don't usually pour the test sample back in. You 'sample' it!

I use the hydrometer tube also, but I have had problems getting it to float "freely" so that it doesn't hang up on the inside and give a wrong reason. Still haven't figured out what the problem with that is.

The container my first hydrometer came in was defective and I wound up with a dribble glass :mad::mad:
Good thing the LHBS was on my way home the next day for a new test jar.
