So, when I boil water in my aluminum bk to set up a proper oxide layer, can I use tap water? My tap water is very hard and chlorinated. Or should I just buy some bottled water? Does it matter?

I used water right out of the garden hose to do my aluminum kettle. I am on a community well that has fairly hard water, but no chlorination.

I use bottled spring water when I brew though.

I used tap water.

A gallon or two in the pot, cover with a sheet of aluminum foil or the lod if it is aluminum.

Boil away for half an hour. You should have a discolored layer of oxide towards the bottom of the kettle and the aluminum lid or foil should be discolored as well.

Don't boil the kettle dry and after use just rinse it out. Do not scrub away the discoloration.

tap water, measuring as you pour it in and calibrate/mark a brew stick (or mash paddle) at ½gallon increments

boil ½ hour & measure = ½ your boil off rate per hour
