So, my first batch, a franzaskaner clone was ready for drinking today. But after tasting it, i got my first taste of the "wet cardboard". I'm really disappointed, but determined to find out the cause and do better next time. I was careful when transferring to my bottling bucket, i only left 1/2 inch of head-space in the bottles. the only thing i can think of, is that i stacked the bottles on their side when conditioning in my fridge/fermenter, maybe this spread out the air bubble and created more surface area for the beer to come in contact with?

Any ideas?

Thanks!!!

i'm pretty sure that turning the bottles on the side will not cause staleness from surface area.

maybe the bottle caps were bad. did you use extract syrup? maybe it was bad.

no, it was all fresh. but i did open another just now and the taste is gone! woo!!!!!! I think i was just a little rough when putting them in the fridge, my thought process was "they are capped, what can go wrong now?" (knocked a few off the stack and whatnot) But I'm happy now!!
