Has anyone built a system using PC to control everything vs building a control panel? I have been looking at the cost to build out a control panel to run my 10 gallon system but through my work I have access to a ton free older PC's that we retire every few years and was thinking there must be a way to use a PC to control the system. Maybe adding a USB Hub with USB Temp Controllers? Has anyone attempted or accomplished a system like this? I'd just love to find another use for these older PC's since I can obtain for free.

You may find some National Instruments cards on eBay, after all the PCI slots you will need there may a cost issue. Also you need to find a copy of lab view and learn it.

You can use the PC to run the programming software for an automation direct PLC.

MIght be a bit penny wise / pound foolish if the cost of (even used) PCI cards outway the cost of something like a beagle bones black running Linux with the I/O already available on the board
