While at starbucks this winter I noticed they where giving away coffee grinds for fertilizing gardens. I gave it a try and threw them down on my plants. I live in RI and they are starting to sprout again with a vengance!!! Coffee grinds do work on hops.

I still plan on throwing down my usual manure fertilizer on them. Is there anyone else out there that has tried coffee grinds?

I'm going to try watering my plants this year with a gravity-fed system using run-off water from rain barrels. Anyone doing this already??

Isn't it the acid from the coffee beans that helps the roots better absorb nutrients already in the soil...not so much that the beans are actually "feeding" them?

I have rain barrels for watering my lawn, but not for the hops (yet). I'm hoping to tacke that project in early May. I'll report back when I've got something to report.

thanks, just the info I was looking for... ie: coffee grounds.
My hops are just sprouting yet I don't plan to mess with animal droppings, especially on my balcony.
cheers

I have a 275 gallon container for my rain system. It looks like a plastic cube in a metal frame attached to a pallet. It has a ball valve on the bottom and an 8 inch opening at the top. I found it on craigs list! $100 and worth every penny. It lets me water just about every day it doesn't rain and waters 75 plants.
