Is it normal for a CO2 cylinder to die only once the keg kicks?

I had a leak issue that I thought I fixed, co2 was holding steady for a long while, then a keg recently kicked that I forgot to shut the gas off too. Now a few days later I'm getting to it and the co2 is dead...

Is this normal? Whats the difference between a keg of beer and a keg of co2? If there was a leak, shouldn't it have been evident before the keg kicked?
