I just got my first keg. I was going to try to transfer from my carboy to keg with a closed system. I read an article on this in BYO mag December issue. I am trying the first method they describe.

Pushing beer with a couple PSI into the keg. I tried a test with some water in my carboy. Would purge keg first, then push beer in. Pretty simple, but question is what is the connection they draw from keg in line?

I tried this and it starts just fine but then there is back pressure. So what is connected to in line that would automatically relieve pressure? Stupid question I am sure.

I have never done it but I assume you are feeding the beer in through the liquid out tube right?

Then you would just need to put a gas connection on the gas in post without anything connected to the other end to relieve the pressure or just use something else to depress the poppet like a screwdriver or something like that to relieve the pressure.

I don't have BYO so I haven't read the article you're referring to.

I'm having a hard time visualizing what you're asking- are you trying to relieve pressure in the keg as that is the location where the back pressure is being built up? Open the pressure relief valve (if you're using a ball lock) on the lid and keep it open (twist it a quarter turn) or pull it out completely. If you're using a pin-lock, use a gas-side pin-lock fitting that is attached to nothing to blow-off pressure.

I don't think you really need to worry about the pressure with transferring. It takes very little pressure to move a liquid like that especially if you just use it to start a siphon for you.

I've been doing CO2 push transfers for the last year and am totally sold. I cold-crash under CO2 as well. My autosiphon is covered in dust and will likely stay that way.

Carboy to carboy, carboy to keg, keg to keg, it's easy as pie and all good.

Less than 1 psi involved, nbd...

Cheers!

Do what Baja says - I use ball lock so I just pull the pressure relief valve occasionally to reduce the back pressure. You can use the gas side connector idea on either a ball lock or a pin lock to hold the poppet open. I wouldn't remove the lid though - if you went to the trouble of purging your keg with CO2, you're just letting oxygen in if you open the lid.
