Yo whats up brewers I got a question and a bit of a story. Ever since i started keggings i have never sanitised my kegs with chemicals i just turn them upside down over a peice of pvc pipe that sprays water onto the bottom and fountains down the sides then move to kegging the beer, is this safe could i possibly get sick? it works good i have never gotten infected beer or anything but i cannot get a good chemical cleaner where i am and all the online sites state they cannot send via air so that sucks and not to mention we dont have a ship that could deliver it for me unless i rent a rubber inflatable boat and row about 2000miles. For the ss kegs i only use bleach for my fermenter and i dont think i could use that for stainless kegs. thank you guys have a good brew!

If you've never had a problem, I'd say carry on.

You really need to tell us where this far-flung spot of land is, though...

Cheers!

Bleach is fine to use on stainless steel; it's quite normal for commercial kitchens (restaurants, etc.) to use bleach for cleaning anything that is stainless.

Far out!

Sanitizing is overrated. Oh yeah -- I do it. But I wonder...

None of the organisms that spoil beer will make you sick. Otherwise, the human race would have died out long ago.

I'm sure you can find bleach and vinegar? 2T of each in 5 gallons makes a great no rinse sanitizer. 2 minute contact time. You're done.

No! That is 100% bad information, bleach is not fine for stainless steel

The chlorine in bleach can also cause off flavors even in small trace amounts...

Uh, bleach plus vinegar equals deadly chlorine gas. Dumbest suggestion I've read all day.

Uhm, no. Not when you add them to 5 (five, FIVE) gallons of water. Chemist Charlie Talley, who developed Starsan, recommends this as an alternative sanitizer. Do your due diligence before making such replies.

Yeah, read that whole thread... all 7 (seven, SEVEN) pages of it. Didn't say anything about mixing bleach and vinegar. Maybe you wanted me to listen to that entire podcast too, but you didn't link it, and I'm not in the mood to listen to one guys argument about how safe it is to mix chlorine bleach with an acid.

My due diligence is 7th grade science. That and the literally hundreds of pages on the internet saying it's a big no no to mix bleach and acids.

Just admit you are wrong.

I don't want to get into a pissing war with you, but I am not wrong.
Charile Talley knows more about chemistry than either of us.

He starts at 11 minutes. I'm out of here.

Whatever works for you, but I'm a big believer in maintaining a set protocol for cleansing & sanitizing all my equipment after & before each use.
I clean my legs w/ a good soak (1 hour minimum) in a hot solution of B-Brite, 1 tbsp/gal, followed by a thorough rinse w/ hot water. I do a final rinse & flush of the dip tube w/ StarSan. After emptying the dip tube(push on the poppit) I emty any excess StarSan and seal w/ very light burst of CO2 & store until needed.
If the timing is right I also use the hot B-Brite solution to flush mine kegerator serving lines and taps then rinse w/ water before hooking up a new beer.
