First batch of this recipe. Putting in here to keep track and update. Will make formal recipe thread once testing is completed.
The intention of this beer is not to be just another IRA or red IPA. I wanted balance with this beer. I wanted good malt flavour with good hop flavour and aroma balanced out. I also wanted it to be a lower abv and lower IBU so you can drink a few of them without having sandpaper tongue.
That being said here's the recipe:
Target OG: 1.056
Target FG: 1.011
Target SRM: 16.75
Target IBU: 35
Yeast: US-05 or WLP001 or WY1056 or BRY-96
9 lb Canadian Pale Ale
0.5 lb Crystal 80
0.5 lb Carared
0.25 lb Victory
0.25 lb Crystal 120
2 oz UK Roasted Barley (600SRM)
Mash at 154 for 60 mins
Boil for 75 mins
1 oz Centennial FWH
1.25 oz Centennial steep for 30 mins @ 170
1.25 oz Cadcade steep for 30 mins @ 170
Ferment for 4 days @ 65
Raise to 68 for 4 days
When no off flavours detectable:
1.25 oz Centennial Dry Hop for 4 days
1.25 oz Cascade Dry Hop for 4 days
So far, the pre fermentation post boil sample is missing some of the maltiness I was expecting but has the bitterness level I was expecting and hop flavour I was expecting. I am hoping that fermentation and some time with bring out the malt character and tame the hop flavour a bit more but overall on first sample I am very happy with this. I also love the colour so far.
