Hello,

I'm brewing my very first Black IPA tomorrow. Any adivces / recommendations to change something ?
Currently I have spare pack of S-04 yeast which fits the best for English Ale. Will it fit to my black IPA?

P.S. Sorry for metric units, I'm from Europe.

I just plugged the numbers into brewers friend and I think it may be a tad light for a Black IPA. Maybe bump up the Carafa I to .55kg? with it at .4kg Im getting an SRM of 26 (which fits the style guidlines for a Black IPA but its on the very low end).

Also, I dont see any dry hops. Were you planning on dry hopping?

You went WAY light on the aroma hops. I would bump up the 60 min additiona bit take all of the 30 min additions and add them at flameout. Im not a huge fan of 30 min hop additions as I find that they dont contribute a ton to flavor (if any) and Id rather just bitter a tad more at 60 and add a bunch of aroma and dry hops.

I would do at least 55g aroma hops and probably 60-70g dry hops.

And to finish. so-04 is fine. I use WLP007 (dry english ale) yeast in my black ipa and its awesome

Thank You for reply.

Yeah, De-Husked Caraf I is too light. I was planning use Caraf III which would contribute more to the color, but local supplied didn't have those.

Also I'm a bit afraid to use more than 5% of Caraf I malt but I'm going to take your suggestion and increase up to 0.5kg what will bump SRM to 30.33.

For dry hopping I have some Simcoe, Citra. Maybe it would be worth to remove Cascade from boiling use more Chinook. And transfer all Cascade (55g) to dry-hopping?
