chest freezer question

i just bought a new chest freezer .
have a fermenting IPA in the freezer but when i bended to take a sample today i got a strange sensation in my nose(hard to breath). could that be as a result of co2 that is coming from the fermenter that is sinking to the bottom of the freezer?

Yeah - that stuff is nasty. Hurts the eyes too if you get too much...

People have died in commercial breweries/wineries because they are above the fermenter and get such a huge waft of CO2 that they faint and fall in the vessel and drown.

I was told to watch out for that when I worked at a commercial distillery.

What a way to go. Kind of like dying while having sex.

I recently toured Jack Daniels, and they let you stick your head right in their fermenters. It's hard to describe, but it will put you on your behind in a hurry.

What till you get about 4 fermenters going at one time! The "burn" will get ya without bending over!

I bet nearly all of us that use a chest freezer for fermenting have experienced this at least once! I certainly remember the first time I leaned into mine to pull a carboy out. Now I take a deep breath before reaching in.

CO2 + H2O = carbonic acid. In your nose, in high concentration.

I went there way back on a family vacation and saw some lady nearly pass out... I also saw some 10 year old kid stick his hand in and taste it... Good tour!
