Where's the cheapest place to get LME?

My LHBS sells Briess light LME for $2.10 a pound. I try to brew in a manner that saves me as much time and space as possible, so switching to all-grain is not an option.

I suppose I could store lots of LME in my garage, but the drums seem to be huge 500 lb monsters.

Any suggestions on where I can get the cheapest LME?

I've never seen anything cheaper than that, and I would be surprised if I did, my local place sells LME for 4.24 a pound. You seem to have a great deal already. And online, most places sell it for around 12 bucks for a 3.3 pound can which comes to like 3.63 a pound + shipping!

Yeah, my LHBS also sells lots of "hydroponic" equipment. i've never seen anyone else in there getting brew stuff, all the other customers are getting bags of fertilizer and grow lights. I think the homebrew sales might be a laundering operation, but if I get cheap homebrew supply out of it, i don't mind.

hey, some of us actually do legit stuff with hydroponics. I've started exotic pepper species from seed indoors in coconut coir, then moved them to a hydroponic setup until spring hit and I could put em in dirt, harden em up and plant em outside in the ground.

back on task though...have you looked for cheap pricing on DME? I went to AG quickly but I wonder if there's some sweet bulk deals on DME that might be cheaper than LME in the long haul.

a lot of people will say there is more benefit to DME over LME and if I remember right its a lot cheaper

That is a great price for LME. I don't know that I have seen it cheaper, but even if you do find it cheaper the shipping will almost certainly make it more. In the Seattle area Homebrew Heaven in Everett seems to have about the best prices and they get $2.85/lb for quantities under 50lbs.

At $2.10/lb with no shipping you are living large.

In my opinion, ANY use of hydroponic equipment should be legal!:fro:

I just think it's hilarious that I'm probably the only guy who buys anything from this shop. The guys running the store barely know anything about brewing, it's strictly a purchasing location, I don't hang out with these guys asking them advice or anything like I did with my LHBS when I lived in Eugene.

Yeah, after reviewing all the prices online, I probably should just realize I've got it pretty sweet on prices down here in Oly:

1) LME for $2.10/ lb.
2) Grains for $1.30/ lb
3) Hops shipped from hopsdirect, cheap shipping since they're just over the mountains.
4) Local microbrewery gives me high quality by-product yeast for free.

I can brew my extract recipes for under $20 each time... but I'm always trying to find a way to make them cheaper without making the logical leap to all-grain.

Oh well, thanks for all the responses. If you're in Olympia, stop by HealthCrafts off of Pacific Avenue if you want some cheap LME or some grow lights.:mug:

At my LHBS, if I bring my own container and I buy more than 3Kg of LME, it's 3.85$/kg. Otherwise it's 6$/kg.

Pak 'n Save seems to be the cheapest place to buy LME.

Make sure you add in the shipping charges when comparing prices. 65 pounds from 12919to 98501 via UPS should be close to $70.

UPS Ground By End of Day,
Tuesday
November 17, 2009 69.87 USD*

Days In Transit: 5 Billable Weight:
65.0 lbs.

Maybe their shipping is a little less but this is from the UPS website.

That would make it $2.46 per pound delivered.

You should be able to get it cheaper locally so you don't have to pay shipping.

Yeah, I'm not sure North Country's Washington State equivalents would have those 60 lbs pails, nothing I've seen on their sites indicates it.

Got more of my cheap LME from my LHBS today. I asked them for some star san and they had no idea what i was talking about. oh well, fresh and cheap LME is still worth it.
