Carboy thermowell length?

I'm working on an automated fermentation chamber design, and I want to use thermowells in stoppers in my carboys (5, 6, and 6.5 gal). What length thermowells should I be looking for to make sure I get a good wort temperature sample?

You want to get the probe roughly 3" off the bottom of the fermenter.
